Have you ever looked up at the night sky with awe & wonder?
It is 1986 and I am 7 years old.
The 9 o’clock evening news has just started but for me it’s bedtime...
I feel my mum’s soft cheek on my face and my dad’s warmth as he embraces me to say goodnight.
I walk upstairs to my bedroom and open the door.
It is dark and cold as I get under the covers 🌃
I feel scared.
So I sit up and quickly turn my head towards my bedroom window,
where a little light comes through by the shining stars.
They give me comfort, you see...

And look at how pretty they are!
Twinkling away against the night sky.
My mind boggles by how many of them I see!
And how big space is…
Then I start to wonder what kind of worlds are out there 🪐
Are there people like us?
What does their world look like?
My brain is imagining all these planets and their moons and stars 🌠
and I am so excited by all the different possibilities!
And then I notice that the dark doesn’t seem so scary anymore.
Content and comfortable, my eyelids grow heavy.

I continue to do this every time I feel scared
as it helps me settle.
But today is different...
I am actually excited about it becoming nighttime! 🌚
And then I see it!
HALLEY'S COMET!
Oh my! I can’t believe I’m seeing it...
And that it will be another 76 years until it comes round again. Wow! 💫
I run to tell my dad who is sat in front of the television. He too is so excited!
We run outside to see it in all its full glory.
This is the moment I am no longer scared of the dark and this is the moment I start my life long love of the night sky.
My boy loves to point out the moon to me especially
when he sees it out during the day!
Fast forward 38 years, and of course I am still besotted!
And I now have a child of my own...
who is also scared of the dark.
So, we’ve kitted his bedroom out
with an outer space theme and a night light that rotates
as it projects colourful stars and crescent moon shapes around his room 🌠
Recently, when I was lying down with him…
my arm wrapped around his shoulder,
with his creamy, plump cheek resting on my chest
and curly wispy hair tickling my nose,
I could feel his tiny, soft breath blow on me as he fell asleep,
Basking in this relaxing and bonding moment,
I lost myself in the gentle glow of his night light, marvelling at the colours it cast.
"These colours are so beautiful," I thought to myself,
each hue reminiscent of the stunning images captured by the
James Webb and Hubble Telescopes of galaxies and nebulae...
The vivid pinks and electric blues, luminous greens, vibrant oranges and reds shining in the dark.

I just had to recreate them in my art…
So, by spraying paint, pressing on crumpled film for texture,
adding crisp outlines to the planets and detailing white paint onto the canvas for stars…
There it was! I had it…

About Simmi Sandhu
Simmi is an acrylic painter and mixed medium Artist from London.
She has exhibited at venues such as Foxlowe Arts Centre, Keele University Arts Gallery, All Saints Arts Centre and has been featured on BBC radio.
Her painting Planet Phoenix has recently been selected by Cista Arts who are located in London and Paris for their prestigious international exhibition.
Simmi’s art is in homes across the UK, and in private collections in Australia, Germany and the US.
Her original art has also been collected by London based music record label, Far Out Recordings for their private collection.
Simmi holds a BA in Visual Theories from the University of East London and an MA in Contemporary Curating from Manchester Metropolitan University.
